The Acquisition Workers

Then the roads went outward.

Before anything could be coded, the corpus had to become real.

Not remembered.

Not guessed.

Not approximated from snippets.

Acquired.

This was the country of the C-line.

Worker C helped establish the discipline of acquisition and, perhaps more importantly, the discipline of the handoff. Repository authority outranked conversational recollection. Acquisition did not silently become coding. Later Workers were to receive explicit inheritance rather than folklore.

Then came Worker C-B, who carried the General-news stratum through reconstruction and validation. Qualification had to be deterministic. Caps had to be ranked correctly. Ordering had to be reproducible. What remained was not merely a list of articles but a chain explaining why those articles, rather than their neighbours, survived.

Worker C-B-Jr inherited the Specialist Technology and Cybersecurity line.

The suffix mattered.

This was not a Worker pretending to be the ancestor. It was a Worker inheriting a bounded task.

That idea—inheritance without identity—became one of the project's quiet achievements.

Then came Worker C-C and Worker C-C-Jr, who entered the most troublesome acquisition terrain: Business and Mainstream Technology.

Here the temptation to invent was particularly strong.

Some sources were difficult to access. Canonical URLs were uncertain. Full text was unavailable in places. Bloomberg material in particular produced the sort of situation in which a careless system can begin turning snippets, summaries, search-result text, or prior descriptions into counterfeit evidence.

They did not have permission to do that.

And so some things remained unresolved.

This is one of the places where the project became itself.

A lesser story would say that the Workers triumphantly found everything.

Our story says:

sometimes they could not lawfully or adequately recover the text.

So they stopped.

The Charter later memorialized exactly this conduct: C-C and C-C-Jr carried the Business line through source-access, identity, canonical-URL, and full-text problems without treating inaccessible material as evidence.

There are many ways to make a dataset complete.

Only some of them preserve the truth.

The C-workers learned that incompleteness could be cleaner than completion.
